A market was established in Pietermaritzburg in 1847, in an open area in the centre of the village. In 1855 a brick and mortar building was erected which, after some 27 years, no longer served the needs of the community. In 1883 a new Market was built on what is to day still referred to as the Market Square.
This Market served 'Maritzburg and the surrounding area for 88 years until 1972, when a new market was built on a site outside the central business district were it still operates today.
